 Pros(e) of Pie is returning to the Hudson Valley Writers’ Center in Sleepy Hollow. Join as for an evening of true storytelling in a historic train station overlooking the Hudson River. This is one of the prettiest venues in the region and we’re delighted to be sharing it with you.

About the theme: In April, we’re sharing stories about discovering a part of ourselves. Do you remember that first time you stood up for yourself? Have you written the great American novel? Was there a teacher that helped you finally express your feelings? Maybe you broke with your upbringing and took a stand your family was not happy about. Or did you take a leap sharing who you really are? We want to hear about your breakthroughs, your life lessons, and your heart aches.

March Theme: “HOW I MADE IT”

About the theme: This month we want to hear stories about your adventures in making it. Did you build something from the ground up – a business or a bookshelf? Was it a smashing success or a miserable failure? Did that treehouse turn out to be a bad idea? How about that costume you put together from scratch? Did you save the day and win accolades or hang your head in defeat? Whatever the outcome, we want to hear your stories about making it.

Pie bakers welcome: Tempted to see how your pie-baking skills stack up against your neighbors? Here’s an incentive for entering a pie in our bake-off. Your pie gets you one free admission! Please keep in mind: to get your free ticket, you MUST let us know what type of pie you’re bringing a pie at least TWO days in advance of the show.  Get in touch soon with the type of pie and we’ll reserve your spot!

February Theme: “Good Old Days”

We’re kicking off 2017 by returning to the Sleepy Hollow Firehouse Hall. We’re proud to be one of the events bringing attention to this beautiful community venue.

About the theme: This month we’re looking back to times we each remember fondly. Was there something that could have only happened at that certain time of your life? Or a certain point in history? Was the world a different place? The day you overcame a childhood bully, or seized unexpected victory? Was there a family tradition you want to relive? Or remember dating before Tinder? Or maybe the good old days weren’t so good after all. We want to hear the good, the bad and the ugly about that ‘other’ time..

FREE November show to thank our fans

We’ve had an incredible start to our 4th year of storytelling. Premiering at a new hidden treasure of a venue in Sleepy Hollow in September.  Two amazing shows in October: our 4th Annual Halloween show at the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, and our first smash hit collaboration with Historic Hudson ValleyStory Jam at Sunnyside. Plus the Moth’s first show ever at the Tarrytown Music Hall. To thank you all for the support, we’re bringing you another FREE, all open-mic show at Muddy Water Coffeehouse in Tarrytown.

This will be an EARLY show again. Seating is FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED. Since this is a free show, please support our hosts by buying plenty of coffee and treats before and during the event. (No pie bake-off this month. The competition returns next show!)

About the theme: This month we’re sharing stories about connections. Work, family, geography, cause – all things we can feel tied to. A kindergarten friendship that’s lasted a lifetime. Love at first sight. That town ‘ visited on a whim but felt at home right away. The job you’re stuck with. That uncle you wish you could avoid at family gatherings. Did you go through a rough patch before coming together again? Some ties strengthen and unite. Others weigh us down like iron shackles. We want to hear the good, the bad and the ugly about the ties that bond.

STORYTELLERS: This is your chance to test-run the story you’ve been itching to get out. Anyone interested gets to tell their 5 minute story on Saturday, November 19. Just make sure you’re signed up by 7:30p!

4th Annual Halloween Special in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery

The PoP Halloween Tradition Continues:
The 4th Annual Halloween Special in the world famous Sleepy Hollow Cemetery!

We’ll be back at the Cemetery’s Washington Irving Chapel – the perfect venue for an evening of true Halloween tales. Join us for a stellar line-up of the region’s best storytellers sharing true Halloween-y tales: memorable Halloweens, costumed misadventures, and actual brushes with terror.

As always, you’ll start off tasting a few pies and have a chance to vote on your favorite.  Brave guests can put their name in the hat for a chance at a 5-min open mic slot. Plus opportunities to participate anonymously.

Tickets are already selling for this special edition of Pros(e) of Pie, the Hudson Valley’s most popular storytelling series. Come find out what’s been drawing audiences to sold-out shows across the region for more than three years. Trust us, it’s not just the pie!

Special October Event: STORY JAM @ SUNNYSIDE

Get ready for some outstanding storytelling this October!

We’re especially excited to be working with Historic Hudson Valley to co-produce an evening of storytelling at Washington Irving’s Sunnyside.  Instead of our usual monthly theme, we’re celebrating our form of great American storytelling at the home of America’s first great author.

Two hundred years ago, Irving gave you Ichabod Crane, Rip Van Winkle and the Headless Horseman. For this special night, we bring you six of the best modern storytellers : Moth superstars, local storytelling masters, and seasoned entertainers sharing their best true stories. Adventures and embarrassments, loves and joys, achievements and defeats – you’ll experience them all. The evening’s line-up:
Bonnie Levison  (Moth Radio Hour, Central Park SummerStage, Nantucket Comedy Festival, The Story Barn)
Sandi Marx (Moth champ featured on Moth Radio Hour, Risk!, Yum’s the Word, “You’ll Be Sorry” solo show
Isaac Oliver (author of Intimacy Idiot – one of NPR’s best books 2015, recurring evenings at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater)
Jim Keyes (beloved co-creator, composer and performer at Irving’s Legend and Dickens’ Christmas Carol, founding member of the Hot Rod Pacer band)
Jeff Solomon (Moth champ, award-winning playwright performs solo plays The Santa Closet and Mother/SON)
Jim O’Grady (Moth champ, WNYC reporter featured on NPR, Studio360, This American Life)

Join us under a grand tent, with Irving’s stately home and the beautiful Hudson River providing the backdrop for the season’s best evening of storytelling.  Irvington’s Wolfert’s Roost will be on hand selling beer, wine and seasonal bites.

PoP at the Chautauqua Institution

We’ve been at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York teaching a fully booked week-long storytelling class called “Telling the Stories of Your Life”. This is the second year in a row we’ve been invited to add our brand of storytelling to the curriculum.

On Friday, July 29, 5:30-7pm, at Hultquist Center, 2nd floor, we’ll be presenting a special installment of PoP.  Join us to hear students from our class and brave members of the Chautauqua community tell their true, personal stories publicly – many for the first time!

About the theme: Talk about mixed feelings! This month, we’ll be hearing stories about conflicted feelings, mixed reputations – all those difficult love/hate relationships. That horrible ex you just couldn’t get enough of. The soul-starving job that paid you too well to leave. The time your arch-nemesis saved your life. That horrible neighbor who always insists on helping you. Loving Alanis Morissette’s “Isn’t It Ironic?” even though she misuses ‘ironic’. We want to hear about all the Love/Hate experiences you’ve lived through.
